Risk Assessments

Lightning is unpredictable and potentially devastating. A single strike can threaten lives, damage critical infrastructure, and disrupt business operations. If you’re responsible for complex structures or valuable assets, an important question arises: Is your building truly protected against lightning risk?

Effective lightning protection begins with understanding risk. Every structure faces a unique combination of vulnerabilities, and identifying these risks is the first step toward building real resilience.

Understanding Lightning Risk Categories

In accordance with international standards, lightning risks are classified into four categories:

  • Risk R1: Loss of human life
  • Risk R2: Loss of service to the public
  • Risk R3: Loss of cultural heritage
  • Risk R4: Loss of economic value

Risk 1: Loss of life

This is the most critical risk category. It evaluates the potential for lightning to cause injury or death due to direct lightning strikes, fire or explosion, electrical shock (touch and step voltages) or failure of safety systems
Buildings with high occupancy or hazardous environments require careful evaluation of this risk, including Hospitals, Schools, Commercial buildings, Industrial plants, Fuel or chemical facilities. Protecting lives is always the primary priority in any lightning protection design.

Risk 2: Loss of service to the public

This risk considers the impact of lightning on essential services that the public depends on. Lightning damage can result in power outages, communication failures, disruption of water supply, shutdown of emergency services or data centre downtime.
Facilities such as substations, telecom towers, municipal infrastructure, and critical service buildings must be protected to prevent widespread disruption. In Southern Africa, where lightning activity is high, this risk is especially significant.

Risk 3: Loss of cultural heritage

Some structures and assets are irreplaceable. This category applies to historical buildings, museums, monuments, churches, archives and libraries.
A lightning strike could result in fire damage or destruction of culturally significant structures and artefacts. Proper protection ensures these assets are preserved for future generations.

Risk 4: Loss of economic value

This risk focuses on financial impact. Lightning can cause equipment damage, production downtime, loss of stock, data loss, business interruption and costly repairs.
For commercial and industrial facilities, this is often a major concern. Even a single lightning event can result in significant operational and financial losses.

Why a Professional Risk Assessment Matters

Ignoring or underestimating lightning risks can have serious consequences. Overlooking even a single vulnerability may lead to:

  • Costly structural damage
  • Operational shutdowns
  • Safety hazards
  • Reputational harm

Compliance is not simply about meeting regulations—it is about safeguarding people, property, and long-term business continuity. However, lightning protection standards and technical terminology can be complex and difficult to interpret without expert guidance.

Our Tailored Approach

We conduct comprehensive lightning protection risk assessments in line with the latest standards. Our process is designed to:

  • Analyse your building’s specific structure, purpose, and exposure
  • Identify relevant risk categories
  • Translate complex calculations into clear, practical recommendations
  • Develop a protection concept tailored to your needs

Our focus goes beyond compliance. We aim to design lightning protection measures that are technically sound, economically practical, and precisely aligned with your building’s requirements.

Confidence Through Preparedness

Our goal is to recommend cost-effective safety measures that keep you compliant without compromising protection. With the right assessment and strategy in place, you gain more than regulatory approval—you gain confidence, resilience, and peace of mind knowing your building is prepared for any storm.
