Years Past. Quality Remains.

Look closely at this image. That square metal cover in the photograph. Stamped “H.H.K. 7477 DUBO SOUTH-AFR-0071.” Set into the ground, surrounded by gravel, walked over countless times. It looks unremarkable. It is anything but. That cover is part of a lightning protection system installed years ago, and it is still working. Still conducting fault current safely into the earth. Still doing the job it was put there to do.

This is what quality looks like after the years have gone by. Not shiny. Not new. Just present, functional, and dependable.

Fifty Years in the Ground

Helmut Hermann Kanwischer started HHK in 1976. He was a German immigrant who came to Southern Africa with a specific belief: lightning and earthing protection isn’t something an electrical contractor tacks on as an extra. It is a discipline. One that demands scientific rigour, specialised knowledge, and a refusal to cut corners.

Five decades have passed since then. Every lightning season, every difficult soil condition, every new facility built across the region has tested that belief. And it has held. Systems we put in the ground in the 1980s and 1990s are still there. Still certified. Still quietly doing their work when the storm rolls in and the strike hits. The cover in the photograph is one small piece of that legacy. There are thousands more like it, scattered across mines, data centres, commercial towers, hospitals, and industrial plants all over Southern Africa.

You don’t prove quality on the day you install. You prove it every year after, when nothing goes wrong and nobody has to think about it.

Standards Were Never Optional

From the start, HHK built everything to SANS and IEC standards. SANS 62305, SANS 10313, SANS 10199, and the rest of the international standards governing lightning protection and earthing design. These were never aspirational targets. They were the floor. The minimum below which no project walks out the door.

That is why those older installations are still standing. A system designed to the right standard, built from real soil resistivity data instead of guesswork, installed by people whose only trade is lightning and earthing protection, does not degrade quickly. It does what it was built to do. Season after season. Strike after strike. For decades.

The Same Principle Today

The people who installed that cover in the photograph are long gone from the team. The standards it was built to have been revised and strengthened. The tools have changed. The company has grown from one man’s conviction in 1976 to more than 100 specialists across eight branches, from Cape Town to Windhoek.

What hasn’t changed is the thinking behind the work. Every system HHK installs today, every risk assessment, every soil resistivity survey, every engineered earthing design, every Certificate of Compliance, is carried out with the same understanding. The real test isn’t on installation day. It is ten, twenty, thirty years later, when the cover has been rained on and baked by the sun and walked over, and the system beneath it is still protecting the people and infrastructure above.

Years pass. Seasons cycle. Standards evolve. The quality remains.
